The government acquisition strategy for homeland security will develop rapidly, and  the technology of this company can play a very significant role in solving the many challenges associated with homeland security. The knowledge of this company's many strengths and successes in the Department of Defense, civilian, and intelligence communities will be key in driving forward profits in the near future.

Working with government and industry partners, this company offers a unique set of technologies and capabilities suited to support an innovative class of homeland security solutions in the areas of chemical and biological terrorism, the protection of critical infrastructure, transportation security and efficiency, border security, disaster planning and recovery, and law enforcement.

With the establishment of the new Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. federal government is undergoing a massive restructuring -- the most significant since the creation of the Department of Defense over half a century ago. This company has developed a variety of visualization and computing technologies ideally suited to allow government decision makers to rapidly assimilate the growing and diverse amounts of data being collected for homeland security. This technology is the key to reducing the data to models and concepts that are more easily understood and manipulated.

Cancer and Stem Cell Research

This company recently announced  that results of a pilot study evaluating the use of its human neural stem cells in a preclinical stroke model will be presented  at the Society for Neuroscience 32nd Annual Meeting in Florida. The objective of this pilot study was to examine the fate of human neural stem cells in a rat preclinical model for stroke and to map survival, migration and maturation of the transplanted cells following distal middle cerebral artery occlusion (dMCAO). The group also developed a battery of behavioral tests used to assess functional outcomes.

"We are encouraged by the results of this study in immunosuppressed lesioned rats," said the CEO of the company.

All of our own transplant experiments to date have been conducted in a special mouse strain with no immune system. Our data shows that it takes up to six months post transplant for our neural stem cells to engraft, migrate and fully differentiate into neurons. It is therefore not surprising that we don't see functional improvement at such early time points in this rat stroke model.

Clearly there is a need for a second, larger study in this model to evaluate functional improvement at later time points and to correlate the behavioral outcomes with graft survival."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently granted orphan product status to this company's SC-I autologous bone marrow stem cells, produced in their Replicell (TM) System, for use in cancer patients requiring a stem cell transplant following high-dose chemotherapy, when they are unable to obtain sufficient numbers of blood stem cells for adequate treatment using current transplant methods.  Recently, the Company was awarded approximately $0.9 million of a collaborative grant by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, providing funding over an 18-month period for the research and development of a bioreactor system to engineer human stem cells into an artificial immune system. The company  is one of four organizations comprising this multi-disciplinary team that combines scientific and engineering expertise in research to support the Department of Defense's initiative to fight biological terrorism.       The company is a late-stage development company focused on human cell-based therapies and intends to leverage its proprietary ex vivo cell production technology to produce patient-specific cell therapeutics for stem cell tissue repair and regeneration, and the treatment of cancer and other infectious diseases. The company's core technology is based on its proprietary Replicel (TM) System, a patented, integrated system of instrumentation and single-use consumable kits for the commercial production of human cells. The System is used to manufacture stem cell-based Tissue Repair Cell and its Therapeutic Cell proprietary products.                                    more
